Ever since I was a toddler, running around in my childhood home, I’ve had a ‘what’s out there’ itch. It was the main culprit when, at the innocent age of 19, I hopped on a plane and left my country of Slovenia for good. Since then I’ve lived in four different countries on two continents (so far…). While in search for my perfect place on the globe, I dipped my toes into the world of writing and proofreading. And soon I saw the massive advantages I had because of my dragging my life around the world in two neat suitcases.

The World is Going Multiculti

Today, I’m not alone. There’s a global trend of people working from diverse locations while on the road exploring. When it comes to business, and especially working with words and content, what advantages can this newly-found ‘multiculti’ aspect of the world add?

When it comes to cultural diversity in business, I believe that times have never been better. Digital nomads – adventurous souls wandering around the world – are on the rise and slowly, but surely, making the globe seem much smaller and much more versatile. Not being limited to a single place and being willing to connect with other like-minded – as well as utterly different people – around the globe has resulted in a rising number of international teams jointly working online towards offering a unique service to their clients.

Are you Missing Out on the Multiculti Experience?

Now, preparing a backpack and hopping on the let’s-go-around-the-world-wagon might not be your cup of tea. But that doesn’t mean that you’re left out just because you prefer to enjoy the comforts of the known, of ‘home’. You’re exposed to and involved with the world’s multicultural reality on every corner. People from around the world travel through your country. Virtual, global teams interact with and look after you, and there are practically no limits to communicating from the most remote parts of our planet.

But, why should you opt for a multiculti team in your business communications? What can a multiculti team bring to your business that you can’t obtain from your typical locally based copywriting agency or freelancer?

#1. Connect With A Wider Audience

The content your business produces is not for you – it’s for your target market, your audience. And audiences don’t connect with perfectly constructed, but flavourless sentences and paragraphs. They search for emotions, for the humanity behind the words, for someone or something to either discover or identify with. #3. Different Perspectives

All situations are destined for a rut at one point or another. If you’re trying to adopt a different approach to your content, but can’t get to any (functional) new ideas that make sense trying out, a multiculti team with a mixed cultural background might just be what you need. Remember point 2. and the creative juices flowing in all directions? These will come in handy when brainstorming for new solutions! With much broader horizons and less limits, they can come up with a rainbow of options and possibilities that a single person would have much more difficulties to get to.

Honestly, the list goes on and on, I believe.

But, in the end, it all boils down to the following: multiculti teams will give your content that necessary interesting twist to be more relatable for a larger number of people. They provide a uniquely deep skill of storytelling, weaving new and interesting perspectives into the copy you’ll offer your audience.

And while you may get a glimpse of that from a freelancer digital nomad you meet in your local café while waiting for your Sunday latte – a team is what will give you all the benefits of the multiculti mindset amplified in a single place. You’ll keep your content production centralised and will avoid the hassle of searching for new freelancers when your go-to guy or gal doesn’t have time. All that without losing the advantages of diversity and unique multicultural perspectives.

Now isn’t that something to write home about!

    Definitely a skill that is not easily sourced Daniela, translators are often guilty of accuracy, but miss the subtle cultural nuances in language, attitude and tone.
    I limit myself to English but am always wary of my client’s audience. I adjust the language when addressing senior party members in Chine, Royal families in the Middle East or high flying American businesspeople. Whether my communication acknowledges the multicultural awareness required in Singapore or the spiritual nuances mandatory in Korea and India language has to be appropriate and equally persuasive.

      I completely agree, Eustace. Adapting the tone and language to the audience is of the utmost importance, and having a team that can do that is not easy to find.
